Teach Your Children To Golf
Turn The Tiger or Tigress Loose. Chip2Score offers great fun as well as a learning tool for the
children in your family. You can order a 7 iron to fit them from Morton Golf. They are a prominent
golfing family and do a great job of meeting the needs of golfers of all ages.
You can participate with your children, depending on their skill level. For instance, you can move
back to 5 feet from the Chip2Score Training Tool and use an 8 iron, 9 iron, wedge or sand wedge
where you lob the ball above the target opening letting the golf ball fall through. This is a good test
and, in the beginning, you may want to compete at the same distance but use the clubs that have to
lob above the opening. It is great training for those little touch shots where slope enters into the
equation when you are golfing severe undulating greens.
Once your children have mastered the grip and are hitting the target with great frequency and good
sweet-spot impact and authority, you might take them to an open area and, using a carpet remnant
to place the golf ball on, teach them to hit a smooth 1/2 shot with a wedge. This shot, if struck with
an even stroke should not fly over 50 yards for older children. Have them set the ball in the center
of their stance like they have been doing with Chip2Score. Let's call this position 6 o'clock. Have
them go back to 8 o'clock for a right-handed golfer and stroke through impact to 4 o'clock.
Once this shot and the distance become consistant, you might want to teach them the 3/4 swing
which is just going back to 9 o'clock and through to 3 o'clock. Once this is mastered and the
distance struck, approximately 75 yards for a mature golfer, then they are ready for full shots.
I never teach a 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock swing for the full swing. I find that most golfers break down
their grip at 10 o'clock and then have to re-grip so I recommend going back to 9 o'clock and
swinging though to 2 o'clock. I find that, once they have mastered this swing, they will learn, from
experience, whether they are one of the few that can master and control the bigger swing.
This same technique would apply to teaching your wife or girl friend.
